Tokyo Stocks Close Thursday Down

(MENAFN) Japanese equities closed in negative territory Thursday as investors offloaded major technology stocks, pulling key indices lower.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 475.32 points, declining 0.88 percent from Wednesday's close to settle at 53,818.04. Meanwhile, the broader Topix index slipped 3.17 points, shedding 0.09 percent to finish at 3,652.41.

Nonferrous metal, marine transportation, and machinery sectors led losses on the top-tier Prime Market.

Investor sentiment soured following aggressive selling in heavyweight semiconductor and artificial intelligence-linked equities, triggered by steep losses on the tech-dominated Nasdaq index alongside weakness across other Asian trading floors.

Despite the downturn, domestic demand-oriented pharmaceutical and retail stocks attracted buying interest, briefly propelling the broader Topix to an intraday record peak during the session.
