Fire Flares Up at Haneda Airport in Tokyo
Shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time, emergency services received reports of "black smoke is visible" billowing from a structure on airport grounds, according to a public broadcaster, which cited local police and fire officials.
Over 30 fire trucks and emergency vehicles rushed to the site, engaging in active firefighting efforts that remain underway, the broadcaster added.
Video footage broadcast by the broadcaster showed thick black smoke ascending sharply around 9:10 a.m., although the intensity appeared to subside shortly thereafter.
The Tokyo Airport Office confirmed the fire originated in a section where demolition work was underway on an old hangar and reassured that flight operations continue uninterrupted.
Authorities from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and Tokyo Fire Department are investigating the incident to determine whether there have been any injuries or individuals trapped by the fire.
