Japan’s Emperor Embarks on Seven-Day Trip to Mongolia
According to a statement from the Mongolian presidency, the imperial couple arrived at Chinggis Khaan International Airport near Ulaanbaatar, where they received a warm welcome from Mongolian officials, including Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh.
The visit, scheduled to conclude on June 13, comes at the invitation of Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh. During their stay, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are expected to explore avenues for strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
As honored guests, the couple will also take part in the Naadam Festival's opening ceremony—a celebrated Mongolian event showcasing traditional sports such as horseracing, wrestling, and archery.
This trip marks Naruhito’s inaugural visit to Mongolia since ascending the throne in 2019. His previous visit, as crown prince in 2007, commemorated the 35th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Japan and Mongolia.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Emperor Naruhito revealed that he plans to lay flowers at a memorial honoring Japanese prisoners who were taken by the Soviet Union and subsequently sent to Mongolia following World War II.
